AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The town of Groesbeck came within days of running out of water this month, even though it knew exactly what could be done to prevent it.

Starting on Jan. 2, Conroe residents will embrace water conservation on a permanent basis until conditions improve.

The city imposed watering restrictions earlier this year, but only as a response to the historic drought conditions. The demand for water has become so severe, in fact, the city pumped nearly a billion more gallons in 2011 (for a total of 4.233 billion) than in 2010 (3.283 billion).

Saint-Gobain recognized for water conservation

The town has recognized the conservation efforts of a local industry which has is reducing its water consumption by 6,755,000 litres annually.

Joe Syed, general manager Saint- Gobain ADFORS, recently received a plaque from Coun. Bob Jeffery, public works committee chair, and Mayor Gordon McKay in recognition of its conservation efforts.

Syed says the company, which makes polymer coated, woven fibre-glass fabrics to act as re-enforcing agents predominantly for the construction industry, will save $15,000 by cutting back on its water consumption.

Water rate hikes tied to aging infrastructure
